Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has slashed the price point of its PlayStation Portable (PSP) in a bid to kickstart sales in the face of stiff competition from Nintendo’s DS.

Sony has already cut the price of the PSP in the US and this week introduced lower prices across the European territories of €169.99.

The cut is effective from the end of April and will be rolled out to all territories by the end of May.

In addition, five new Platinum game titles - Ridge Racer 2, Tekken, Killzone, Loco Roco and Moto GP - will be launched at the lower price of €19.99.

“The combined reductions will unleash PSP, making it a ‘must have’ portable system for all entertainment enthusiasts, allowing them to enjoy the breadth and depth of entertainment opportunities available from PSP,” said Stephane Hareau, PSP marketing manager for Europe.

After a strong launch? it now appears that UK sales of the Sony PlayStation 3 have started to drop off, forcing two major retailers to slash their prices for the console.

WH Smith took out adverts in the Sun newspaper last week, promoting a £25 reduction in the retail price of the console. WH Smith has been offering the basic PlayStation 3 console pack for £399.99 over the bank holiday weekend.

But good news for those not finding out until today -? the offer actually runs until Tuesday April 10.

Alternatively, online retailer Play.com has also cut the price of the PlayStation 3 to £399.99 including delivery.

Cutting 13 per cent, or £64.98, off its own package, Play.com is offering the Sony Playstation 3 PS3 Console with 60GB HDD, HDMI cable and a copy of the film Click on Blu-Ray, for £399.99.

Japanese console giant Nintendo raised its sales forecasts last week, for the fourth time in one year. For the year to end March 31, the company now expects sales to reach Y966bn, an increase of Y66bn on prior forecasts.

Nintendo said the boost is largely due to strong sales of the Nintendo DS portable gaming system software and hardware.

Sales figures for February from market watcher, NPD Group, showed that Nintendo’s DS racked up an astonishing 485,000 unit sales, which combined with strong sales of the Wii, which sold 335,000 units gave Nintendo a 54 per cent share of all gaming hardware sales.

Last week, Sony also had to cut the official US list price of its PlayStation Portable by 15 per cent from $199.99 to $169.99 in order to fend off strong competition from the DS.

Xbox Live accounts allowed to talk with the outside world

Microsoft is prepering to release a Windows Live Messenger client for its Xbox 360 gaming console.

The service allows users to connect to users of Live Messenger clients on the desktop or mobile devices. It is slated for availability in the week of May 7.

The instant messaging application requires an Xbox Live subscription. Xbox Live currently allows its 6 million users to exchange messages with fellow gamers. After expanding the service with support for Windows Live Messenger, users will be able to simultaneously chat with up to 6 people on their contact list while playing games.
Windows Live Messenger boast 260m active accounts worldwide.

Although users of Microsoft’s desktop IM client are able to communicate with users of the Yahoo Messenger service, such interoperability won’t be available to Xbox 360 users, a company spokesperson told vnunet.com.

Yahoo and Microsoft last year unveiled an interoperability service that allows users of both services to exchange messages.
